Super Learning

The Man Who Started It All

Dr. Georgi Lozanov, M.D., Ph.D. (dr_lozanov@yahoo.com)"began his research on the reserves of the human personality more than 30 years ago and in 1966 began his collaboration with Dr. Evelyna Gateva, who introduced art, music and dance into the teaching system." He was the scientist who invented Super Learning, also called Suggestopedia. "He was the founder of the Research   Institute for Suggestology in Sofia and its director for manyyears. He was also the director of the Centre for Suggestology at Sofia University..."

DESUGGESTIVE LEARNING is "Information from the office of Dr Lozanov" and has all of his contact informationa as well as gives the rules for communications with his people and the requirements for training.

A Research Source

Accelerated Learning Robert E. Slavin (Johns Hopkins University) - "This paper represents an effort to summarize the current status of research on effective instruction." In attempting to give an unbiased view of a number of teaching methods it fails to support any of them in an effective manner. But one can get a basic understanding of a number of popular teaching methods and the terminology assigned to each of these.  It would be a great place to start your critical evaluation in regards to the efficacy of SuperLearning, or, as it is called generally, in the U.S., "Accelerated Learning." It has, by far, the most number of helpful sources in regards to superior teaching and learning techniques; though very few of them have any reference to SuperLearning or Lozanov's techniques.

"The largest number of studies of SALT by far were authored or co-authored by the editor of the Journal of Accelerated Learning and Teaching, Donald Schuster." This "research is of mixed quality and is difficult to evaluate." "...and therefore has not been subjected to the rigorous peer review typical of the journals published by the American Educational Research Association or other scientific organizations." "Most SALT studies are either very brief or use very small samples, or both, and some had no control groups. " "A few studies of SALT did attend to problems of making experimental and control groups comparable and holding both to the same objectives, and did find small but statistically significant advantages for the method." "One study (Peterson, 1977) did evaluate SALT in Navy ROTC naval science classes and found results that were somewhat supportive of the method."

Accelerated Learning at Home & School has accounts of success in the classroom with Super Learning techniques.
"Suggestopedia was originally introduced as an intensive, foreign language teaching program. In recent years, however, elements of Suggestopedia have been adopted for accelerated learning of a wide variety of subject material. Increasingly, Suggestopedia, and its North American adaptation SALT, an acronym for "System of accelerative learning and teaching", are being used in schools and colleges in Europe and North America (Scovel, 1979)."

Depamo, B. and Job, R. F. S. (1990).An evaluation of SALT (Suggestive-accelerative learning and teaching) techniques. [Australian Journal of Educational Technology, 6(1), 36-55] is a less than favorable assessment of these techniques.

Journal: The Journal of the Society for Accelerative Learning and
Teaching (SALT, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa) (Formerly Journal of Suggestive-Accelerative Learning) was published from 1980 - 1993. For one year after this the same magazine was published under a different name. Then it was published as the Journal of Accelerated Learning and Teaching
