Mike Beaver on His Early Days as a Hypnotherapist

The first person that I ever regressed to a past life, and to a future life (and that was back in the days when I knew very little about hypnotherapy techniques), said that it was the most awesome experience that she'd ever had in her entire life.

My first paying hypnotherapy client, who came to me for issues arising from abusive experiences he'd had with his father, came for 4 sessions. He never responded to the regression/release technique that's my bread and butter. All I was able to do with him was read him positive affirmations out of a book. After each session I walked him out to his car and asked him questions to try to get some feedback as to whether the technique was working or not. He never would say a single word, until after the last/4th session. Standing near his car, he said that he felt better about his life than he'd ever felt before; even though he was still unemployed.

A lady came to me for severe chronic back pain. The government was paying for her to lay on her back 24/7. Her back muscles were considerably atrophied as she only got up when she absolutely had to. Her back pain was always present 24/7. After coming for one session, she had back pain for 1 hour of each day; and no more. Three weeks later she returned for a second session and then had no back pain at all for an additional 3 weeks.

Another fellow came, for one session, for body tension he was having. 2 or 3 weeks later he called to tell me that not only had his body tension improved considerably, but that he had only used his inhaler (which I didn't even know he was using) only 1-3 times during the period between the session and the call. I then asked him how often he normaly used it before that first session. He replied that he used it about 3 times per day before the one session. We hadn't worked in that area directly in the one session that we had together.

One fellow came to me for an exorcism. After the end of the first session he told me that the left side of his face (the opposite side from the one that I was sitting on) was grimacing and doing all kinds of strange stuff during that session. During the second session he saw, in his mind's eye, a strange something which was eaten by a Venus fly trap. He said that he laughed when he saw that. And he contacted me a number of times in the weeks to follow. He said that he couldn't stop laughing for weeks after that session. It appears that his exorcism was permanent. And he began using Ms. Modi's techniques to do similar exorcisms himself. He said that he had to do those secretly; as the leaders of the Christian churches that he frequented wouldn't allow it.

I was first trained, over 10 years ago, by Ed Martin, of Kingwood, TX. His web page is at The Path Foundation. Though he's a very good hypnotherapist; he never told me about the higher self. Every hypnotherapist will emphasize the techniques they developed themselves. I'm no different.

My wife will tell you that she went to two hypnotherapists before me. And, that though she was able to go into a trance with both of them, she wasn't able to do her best work until she met me. Is that because I'm awesome? Not really. It's because we developed a level of trust in each other.

I'm very good. But everyone has their limitation. In the end, the client's trust in the therapist, or lack thereof, is the primary limiting factor in every session. I did one session, including induction, in 20 minutes. But the woman had been part of a ghost hunting expedition that I went on. So, as a group, she had been around me for some time before we had the session. So, like my wife, a level of trust had been built up between us.

I've helped many clients work miracles in their lives. But, as with all treatments, there's no guarantee. IF you come to trust me, then I will be able to help you help yourself considerably. So the burden is partially on you. Rapport, and trust, is a big part of that which is needed for success. Not trying too hard is another. If you just allow it to happen, without fear, then you will get what you're looking for.

One example of the above, is a gentleman I worked with at the River Oaks Health Alliance in Houston; in order to get my certification under Mr. Martin. The man was a crack addict and was fearful of this knowledge coming out under hypnosis; and, if revealed would, he thought, cause him to lose his access to the hospital. Because of this fear he wouldn't go under when I tried to help him reach a medium level of trance. After, in a group dream session, with one of that day hospital's counselors, he spilled the beans about his addiction, and they didn't kick him out, we tried another session. Because he no longer had the fear, he went under without any problems.
