MEDITATION, HYPNOSIS CAN RELIEVE PAIN AND INSOMNIA, PANEL SAYS By DARLENE SUPERVILLE
Associated Press
"Meditation and hypnosis are among the alternative treatments an independent panel of the National Institutes
of Health suggested Wednesday as ways for millions of Americans to cope with insomnia and chronic pain."
"Available data support the effectiveness of these interventions in relieving chronic pain and in achieving some
reduction in insomnia, said the panel, which reached its conclusions at the end of a three-day meeting.
"Dr. Julius Richmond, professor of health policy analysis at Harvard Medical School, said many patients have
had little or no success with current medical treatments, most of which are based on drugs and surgery."
"The panel said it found the techniques most effective in treating chronic pain such as lower back pain, arthritis
and headaches."
"It found hypnosis effective for treating cancer-related pain and said sleeplike condition can also be part of
the treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, mouth swelling and tension headaches."
"The panel......recommended educating patients about the health benefits and importance of the therapies."
"It said insurers should treat the alternative therapies as they do standard medical treatments and reimburse
providers accordingly."
WRITE YOUR LOCAL CONGRESSMAN TO GET HYPNOTHERAPISTS CERTIFIED OUTSIDE THE MEDICAL FIELD
IN YOUR STATE SO THAT THE LIKELIHOOD THAT YOUR HYPNOTHERAPIST IS A HYPNOTHERAPIST WHO DOES
JUST THAT, AND NOT A PSYCHOLOGIST OR PSYCHIATRIST WHO OCCASIONALY USES IT BUT DOESN'T REALLY
HAVE A GOOD WORKING UNDERSTANDING OF IT.
THIS LEGITIMIZES THE FIELD AS A SEPERATE NON-MEDICAL PRACTICE; WHICH IT IS.
